Yes, see the sites. And yes, order a croissant or a crepe at one of Paris's famous cafés. But don't let your experience in "The City of Light" end there. Be daring, and get beyond the guidebooks. Immerse yourself in the city. It’s easy to get around—either by Metro or on a two-wheeler, thanks to the Vélib’ bike program—and those who explore are rewarded with the places they find and the people they meet. If you get lost, fear not—you’ll be back downtown by nightfall. There, the pulsing music will show you exactly where you need to be.

Scott's Essentials

No one is expecting you to become fluent, but learning even a little French can go a long way in everyday situations—and people appreciate the effort.

Don't be afraid of the Metro. It's easy, clean, and, unless you plan on renting a bike, it’s the best—and the quickest—way to get around the city.

All of Paris is beautiful, so spend some time outside the city center. My recommendation? Try the Canal Saint-Martin on a Sunday afternoon.
